Henry Steig

Undergraduate Researcher

I am an entomology major with a deep and long-held interest in wild bees. Of particular interest is nesting biology, taxonomy, and host-parasite interactions. I am involved with Project GNBee (led by Dr. Kueneman), where my research focuses on identification and natural history of Andrena, Colletes, and Melissodes. I am also working on a revision of the Nearctic Diadasia with Dr. Florez-Gomez and have independent taxonomic projects on Ceratina and Sphecodes. 

Inspired by the extensive resources that bird enthusiasts have access to, I work to make bee identification as accessible and interesting as possible through photo-based keys and publicly accessible articles. I also contribute significantly to North American bee identifications through iNaturalist and in museum collections. 

Originally from the Pacific Northwest, I have always been interested in the natural world and love hiking, skiing, mountain biking, and climbing. The bee fauna of much of western North America is poorly known, and wanting to improve our understanding of the pollinators and parasites I encounter regularly (especially taxonomically challenging groups like Sphecodes) is a large part of what drives my research.
